This was a telephone interview with Suzanne Roquette done in December 2002. A thanks goes to Mr. Kenneth Earle (Suzanne’s agent) because he has put us in contact. PP- I know you were born in 1942. How were those days during the post-war? SR- I was born in Weimar, in East Germany and we escaped to the West. We were like refugees, had to start everything again. It was quite... you know... PP- Was your family happy with your choice? SR- Yes, my father was a painter, an artist and I’ve sort of an artistic family; one uncle wrote poems and we used to get together. It goes further way on our family tree this artistic side. PP- How did you started your career? SR- I’ve done a few jobs and then getting lessons. Later I had an audition in Berlin for one program. I got the job and I wanted to stay there and went to drama school. And from there it went on... PP- What was your most significant role then? SR- It was the lead part in Sperrbezirk, in Germany. PP- How did you got the part in Space:1999 ? Did you have to do a screen test? How long before the begin ? SR- Well, it was quite a short time. My agent got the part for me and I went there to make a screen test. It happened two weeks or so [before they start shooting]. PP- On the 1st episode you are on of the very first persons to introduce yourself to the commander, but your character ends up to almost disappear. SR- That’s right , I was expecting for a bigger part right from the beginning, since I was one of the Main Mission’s person and thus got more things to do. PP- Didn’t you ask more things to do or more lines? SR- Well, Barbara Bain and Martin Landau had the most screening time on each episode. They had to be for such a long time on screen and it was difficult to workout the plot for me to be more time or have more presence. That’s life. PP- Are you sorry for not being more time on screen? SR- Yes, it would have been nice... PP- What is your favorite episode? SR- I think it’s Black Sun, where I had a little scene outside Main Mission. PP- What about Force of Life. Did you remember the episode in the Solarium ? SR - Yes, I remember (laughs). PP- The scene is very popular among fans... SR- (laughs) PP- What was then your impression about the series? SR- It was very exciting; everything so new. Everyone working there were excited about it. PP- What is your impression about the other actors? SR- Difficult to say, it has been a long time. Martin Landau of course, it was nice to work with him; I mean, he was well known, as some of the actors that made guest appearances. And I’ve worked before with Christopher Lee in Fu Manchu. PP- Did you ever seen the episodes ? SR- Only parts of it. I mean right after shooting. PP- Do you know the series is now on DVD ? SR- Yes. PP- What happened to your character since it didn’t survive to the 2nd series? SR- I know there were a lot of changes when the new producer took over, so... PP- Didn’t they, at least, invite you to go on? SR- No. PP- What have you been doing since Space: 1999? SR- Acting, singing and I’ve been working in television, I’ve done a program for BCC and went to Germany to do one of those soap things.. PP- I know you had a small part on the 3rd Indiana Jones film. What can you tell us about the scene? SR- It was a night shot. It was a huge, huge thing with book burning and a parade. I was supposed to play Leni Riefenstahl who would be directing Hitler to do this or that; filming him. There was a stand on the left side of the columns and I was on the top. What happened then it was morning, the light came up and... sorry can’t do the scene. That was it. PP- I also know you’ve been in Band of Brothers series. How did it happened? SR- Well, I had to meet the casting director and I had to come back and do a screen test. PP- It’s a very short scene and you don’t have nothing to say. SR- Yes, that’s right. PP- Are you still working nowadays? SR- Yes, I sing on clubs, exhibitions and recently I was in Germany to do a series.
